PreK/Kinder. Sport Academy SUCCESS!

by Kristi Potts on 12/26/18

Instructor Senior Master Shane Sanders leads some kids in the basics of Taekwondo.

The Y recently changed its approach with Pre-K/ Kindergarten sports offerings. The previous approach had been focused on offering our traditional school sports of football, baseball, basketball, and soccer. Additionally, these sports were offered exclusively within the respective sport season for 4-week blocks of time. Though these sports were enjoyed by all it, kids at this age enjoy trying new things (sports) and thus it was determined to try a new concept, “Sports Academy”.

The Sports Academy is a 4-week session with each week offering a different sport experience. Though the traditional sports are still part of the Sports Academy, so are many other non-traditional sports. Kids have taken part in Taekwondo, Gymnastics, and Tennis, to name a few and soon Gym hockey, track, Bowling, Kickball, and others will be added in the future academies.

Commented Part-Time Program Director Matt Davis, “The kids and parents have overwhelmingly enjoyed the new Sports Academy concept! If you have interest in signing up your child for Sports Academy, please go to the Y website for more details.”

This new method for providing Pre-K / Kindergarten sports/activity programming will provide a fresher new experience for the kids and bring awareness to a broader range of sports and activities other than just the few offered previously (basketball, T-Ball, soccer). The objective is to provide good healthy, active fun that will sustain the kids’ enthusiasm throughout each session. All the sports mentioned will be offered, but for shorter durations within the respective session.

The next session (3) which will include Gym Hockey, Bowling, and Kickball will begin January 9th - 30th. Register by January 8th. Session 4 starts February 26th – March 20th and will go over Basketball, Tennis, Track, Golf. Register by February 25th. Session 5 on April 17th - May 8th will have T-Ball and Soccer. Register by April 16th. All sessions are on Wednesdays either late afternoon or early evening and will last 45 minutes to an hour. Registration is available online at MCYMCA.com/OnlineRegistration or in person at 101 East Cherry St., Red Oak.
