YMCA Corner - Rosie Stark
by Kristi Potts on 11/28/16
Montgomery County Family YMCA member Rosie Stark recently competed in the Iron Man World Championship triathlon on Saturday, Oct. 8 in Kona, Hawaii. The Iron Man consists of a 2.4 mile swim in the ocean and 112-mile bicycle race before running a full 26.2-mile marathon. She placed 1,908 out of 2,400 other passionate people and professional athletes and completed the course in roughly 13 hours and 33 minutes.
The toughest part of the hot, humid day was when she hit mile 90 on her ride and was told that officials ran out of water for the racers to drink. Brutal, whirling headwinds compounded the ride’s difficulty and left Stark feeling lousy and wondering if she’d finish. Then she laid eyes on her husband, Greg, and was refreshed. “I told him I was feeling OK and would take it slow and steady, with one foot in front of the other,” she said. “They had 5,000 volunteers who smiled and cheered. They donated their time so we could be there in a safe environment. Even medical staff gave their time. That spoke to me. I see this race as a stage for inspiration. You have to overcome, believe, work hard, and know it’s going to be tough, but look it right in the eye and go after it.” But then the sun set during the run, leaving the highway pitch black. Seeing Greg once more carried her with a huge smile and a full heart down that street where dreams are completed. Having Sandy Booker, of Riverton, there to catch her at the finish line was a cherry on top. She felt the love, support, and prayers from back home throughout the grueling day; she also found strength in remembering two deceased Shenandoah youth. “I made a purple heart on my arm to represent Kinsee Rooker, the 14-year-old who was killed by a car while running cross country this summer, and an orange heart for Isaac Gibson, who died of Leukemia in 2013, when he was 10,” she said. “I know how important road safety is and wanted to remember Kinsee as I ran. You just think of them and it’s amazing what it can carry you through.” Above all, though, Stark’s faith is, and has been, her greatest sustaining force.
With
a world championship event dream crossed off her bucket list, Stark said she’s
ready for a new phase. She now aspires to do multi-day ultra-marathons; some
endurance swim races and trail running — and to become a motivational speaker.
At the Y we encourage people to reach their
exercise and personal goals whether
it is losing weight and gaining friends or training for marathons throughout
the country. For

Annual Heritage Club Dinner
by Kristi Potts on 11/21/16
Montgomery
County Family YMCA Press Release (Red Oak, Iowa)
November,
2016
The Montgomery County Family YMCA hosted their annual Heritage Club Dinner at the Red Coach Inn & Restaurant on Tuesday, November 15th, 2016. Dr. Mike Portz of Red Oak and a member of the YMCA’s Endowment Committee served as Master of Ceremonies. The evening and annual program is a night of celebration and appreciation for the wonderful mission work that the YMCA focuses on in the areas of youth development, social responsibility, and healthy living.
Diane Brower of Red Oak, YMCA member and volunteer, offered the evening invocation. Over 90 heritage club members were present and enjoyed the meal served by the Red Coach Inn & Restaurant staff. The YMCA’s Heritage Club Dinner is made possible by the generosity of Tom Carder and his late wife Catherine Carder who realized the importance of an endowment program being established at the YMCA’s beginning in 1995.
A video, produced by Kristi Potts, YMCA Social Media Specialist, was shown that highlighted the past year’s activities and relationship building at the YMCA. That was followed by the induction of Dennis & Katie Bloom of Red Oak to the YMCA’s “Heritage Club Endowment Hall of Fame”. The Bloom’s were honored for their generosity and commitment to the Montgomery County Family YMCA.
This year’s keynote speaker was Keith Zimmer, Senior Associate Athletic Director at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Keith has been at UNL since 1987 and is a member of the Athletics Department Senior Management Team. He pioneered the Nebraska Life Skills program and oversees all components of the nationally recognized life skills programs serving 600 student-athletes in 24 sports.
Keith started by showing a short video about UNL and pointing out some of the commonalities between UNL and the YMCA; such as encouraging excellence, support of one’s community, and establishing good relationships and traditions. He encouraged those present to further develop our area youth and turn them into the future leaders of tomorrow. As he said at one point, “Tonight is a celebration of Excellence-a Celebration of Tradition. A celebration of Community and County coming together to provide a place for many, young and old alike to learn, grow, and thrive.”
Dr. Portz concluded the event by sharing that during
2016 the YMCA has been the benefactor of many gifts including significant gifts
received from the Charles W. Wilson & Norma J. Wilson Foundation, the Helen
Murphy Estate, the Ruth E. Nelson Trust Account, and the Rod & Jean Farmer
Estate. Dr. Portz expressed the YMCA’s
deepest appreciation for all of the endowed gifts that arrived in 2016.
