YMCA HONORS SEN. GRASSLEY

U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) was named a “YMCA Congressional Champion” in Washington, D.C. on Capitol Hill at a breakfast reception on February 26th, 2014. Carol Hibbs, CEO of the Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA, presented the award during the YMCA of the USA’s 21st anniversary of National Advocacy Days. for his leadership in advancing diabetes prevention programs for seniors and low-income individuals.
Senator Grassley was a leading advocate of the Medicare Diabetes Prevention Act which would provide reimbursements in Medicare for community-based diabetes prevention programs, recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Diabetes Prevention Program. These evidence-based programs have been proven to delay or prevent type 2 diabetes and substantially reduce health care costs.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
TOM & NANCY STRUNK

As soon as the doors are open in the morning at the YMCA, Tom Strunk is there, ready to start his day with a few laps in the pool. As if that was not enough, after his morning workout is done he leaves and comes back again with his wife, Nancy, to walk on the track upstairs. It is part of a routine they have developed over the years since they first started coming, and will surely continue long into the foreseeable future.
In a recent letter Tom said, “I have used
the YMCA for swimming and walking 5 days per week since I moved to Red Oak almost 8 years ago. I have covered about 800 miles in the pool and have walked a large number of miles. My wife has also walked 5 days per week. We appreciate the couple’s membership and have taken advantage of it to a large degree. We feel the YMCA is great for us and an asset to the Red Oak community.”

Shamrock Shuffle - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

by Kristi Potts on 03/04/14

The YMCA, in cooperation with the Friends Of The Red Oak Trails, will be staging  the Shamrock Shuffle 5K race/walk on Saturday, March 15th. The event is scheduled to start at 9:00 a.m. and should be completed by 10:00 a.m.

The YMCA and FOTROT will be splitting the proceeds of the event and hope that the Shuffle turns into an annual event.

Both organizations are asking for volunteers to help stage the event. The main duties that we need help with are people acting as course monitors to help with traffic flow and to help at the finish line. Volunteers would meet at 8:30 a.m. that morning in the YMCA’s multipurpose room to find out what and where their assignment is. As I mentioned earlier, the event will be done by 10:00 a.m.

If you are interested in helping out that morning, please contact me by phone at 623-2161 or by email at progdir@mcymca.com.

Thank you for your support of the YMCA and it’s programs.
