Volunteers Needed for Reading Program
by Kristi Potts on 11/26/13
Dear YMCA members,
Would you be able to help our youth at Inman Elementary School in Red Oak Iowa for a few hours a week? Inman Elementary School in Red Oak, Iowa has recently started a literacy program called the "Reading Rangers". This is a literacy campaign aimed at helping the little ones at Inman build their reading skills and benefit from positive adult influences. They are looking for a few volunteers to give approximately one hour per week at a scheduled time with an assigned teacher to just listen to the kids read. The volunteer would listen to each child, one at a time, for as much time as the volunteer is able to give. It is a great way to volunteer as that is what the YMCA is all about – community!
The times available are primarily on Monday and Friday mornings with one Wednesday slot, as well.
For more information on how you can be involved in this program contact Angie Britten at 402-616-2592, 623-4446, or 623-1116.

Philippines YMCA Relief Fund
by Kristi Potts on 11/18/13
This is an update on the Y's efforts to help those who survived the typhoon that struck the Philippines last week.
The natural disaster killed thousands, affected millions more and devastated entire communities. The Philippines YMCA is responding to the humanitarian crisis by providing critical supplies including water, food, medicine and shelter to some of the hardest hit areas. Like Ys in the United States, the Philippines YMCA has the local presence, expertise and relationships to effectively help those in need. Because of its knowledge of the impacted areas, the Y is particularly focused on reaching remote areas where aid is scarce, security concerns are growing and survivors are extremely vulnerable.
The national office of the Philippines YMCA is working closely with its local associations and the Asia Pacific Alliance of YMCAs to maximize their reach and impact. In the immediate future, the Y will continue to respond with emergency aid while developing long-term plans to help people and communities move beyond this tragedy. You can find more information and the latest updates online at ymca.net.
To help our colleagues reach more people, Ys worldwide are mobilizing resources. YMCA of the USA (Y-USA) World Service has established the Philippines YMCA Relief Fund, with 100 percent of the contributions going towards relief and recovery work. In addition to financial assistance, Y-USA's International Group will work closely with the Philippines YMCA and the Asia Pacific Alliance on recovery strategies.
Responding to devastation on such a massive scale requires a passion and commitment to community that is inherent in our organization, and it is this commitment that unites us as a global Movement. Please keep our colleagues in your thoughts and prayers as they work tirelessly to help those in desperate need. Feel free to contact me if you have questions and thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Tom Valentine
