Annual Campaign

by Kristi Potts on 01/02/14

The Y. So Much More.

Montgomery County Family YMCA 2013 Annual Campaign Chair Rudee DeMarce of Red Oak, Iowa and who also serves on the Montgomery County Family YMCA’s board of directors announced that the YMCA in 2013 was able raise a record $56,600 for the YMCA’s 2013 Annual Campaign program.  DeMarce shared the annual campaign funds assist the Montgomery County Family YMCA’s 19 year old policy that “No one is denied membership or program opportunities“ if experiencing financial limitations.  DeMarce also shared annual campaign funds assist the Montgomery County Family YMCA in servicing our community and area with fitness, youth programs, swimming, recreation, child education, older active adult programing and much more.

DeMarce indicated that the 2014 Annual Campaign theme is “The Y. So Much More.” The campaign goal has been set at $56,000 and the campaign volunteer team will be preparing to conduct the annual campaign in mid March 2014 to late April, 2014!

Dangers of the "Blackout Game"

by Kristi Potts on 12/05/13

After an incident that happened the other night I have something serious I would like to bring to your attention: Many kids in our area have started to get involved in the "Blackout" or "Pass Out Game" This is a "game" where they hold their breath, push on their chests or throats with their hands or other items, or folding themselves in half trying to make themselves pass out. What seems like an innocent game and a few seconds of a natural "high" can have very serious and life-threatening complications.
Please be aware this IS happening in our area. Educate yourselves, talk to your kids. Many of our kids just don't realize that every time they do this they are killing thousands of brain cells and putting their life on the line. None of us want anyone getting hurt, especially from something that might be prevented from just a talk with our children. Teach them about the risks and dangers of this "game" that can go by many different names.
G.A.S.P. is a not-for-profit organization that was developed specifically to bring "games" like this to light and help put an end to these senseless injuries and deaths. Please visit G.A.S.P.'s website for more information and helpful tools to educate your family. http://www.gaspinfo.com/en/involved.html
