Turkey Trot Race Postponed

by Kristi Potts on 11/20/20

Hi Turkey Trot Race Participant,

In keeping with the Governor of Iowa’s proclamation in regards to prohibitions of gatherings of 30 or more people for outdoors events we unfortunately will need to postpone the race at this time.  We are hopeful we can offer the race (or substitute themed race) in the near future.

If you registered for the Turkey Trot race prior to the October 30th deadline for a guarantee of the Y logo knitted cap you can stop by the Y during normal business hours to pick up your cap.

We are sorry to have to do this as we very much wanted to offer this race to the community.

If you have any questions please give us a call at the Y.

Thank you,

Matt Davis

by Kristi Potts on 11/17/20

Hi all,

The Montgomery County Family YMCA (MCFYMCA) in compliance with Governor Reynolds recent proclamation has extended programming /activity suspensions to Thursday, December 10th.

This includes;

All basketball team practices/games for all grades

All adult based sport activities  (including co-ed volleyball)

Sports Academy

All aquatic related classes (including Parent-Tot swim )

All fitness related classes

Tumbling classes

Multi-Purpose Room use prohibited. All community based events/activities that might have been scheduled for Multi-Purpose Room or other rooms canceled.

MCFYMCA will still maintain normal building hours all days of the week and all areas of the YMCA (gym, pool, wellness area, track, tennis courts, locker rooms..etc) will remain open. The Wellness/Weight area and Pool use will adhere to limit capacities and reservations are still highly recommended for the Pool and Wellness/Weight area.  Masks are to be worn in the building at all times (entering, leaving, walking hallways, in locker rooms..etc) for anyone (staff, members, guests..etc) age 2 and up. Masks may only be removed during the actual time of workout/sport play with a six feet distance being maintained.

Symptom Checklist adherence is required for all who enter building.

These programs, in accordance with Public Health mandates, may still continue as of right now:

  • The Turkey Trot is still on for Thanksgiving Day

  • The Santa Express is still on for December 6th

We have been in contact with the Montgomery County Public Health Dept and will continually monitor the situation as it moves along.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

Free Tennis Play for Members Starts this Weekend!

by Kristi Potts on 11/16/20

The Montgomery County Family YMCA will once again be offering “Member Free Tennis” on Saturday afternoons beginning Saturday, November 21st.

One tennis court will be set aside each Saturday afternoon from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. to allow Y members the opportunity to play tennis at no charge. Members may only reserve court time for ½ hour at the front desk on Saturday afternoons. YMCA members may have a non-member play with them, but the non-member will have to pay a small fee to participate. Also, all interested players must follow the YMCA’s COVID-19 symptom check list to be allowed in the facility.
“Member Free Tennis” will continue through Saturday, March 27th, 2021.

Scheduled tennis events, such as YMCA tournaments, high school or collegiate matches, etc.  will take precedent over the “Member Free Tennis.”

For more information regarding tennis programs and other activities available at the YMCA, contact the YMCA at (712) 623-2161 or visit the YMCA’s website at www.mcymca.com.

Memorial Dedication for Rudy Kinard

by Kristi Potts on 11/02/20

The Montgomery County Family YMCA will be hosting a memorial dedication ceremony on Saturday, November 7th in honor of the YMCA’s long-time tennis instructor Rudy Kinard.

Plans call for the dedication ceremony to start at 11:00 am in the YMCA’s multipurpose room with a short program. Light refreshments will be served at the ceremony.

As an active member and volunteer of the Montgomery County Family YMCA, Rudy is fondly remembered as the tennis instructor who worked tirelessly with his students from 2005 – 2019 before stepping away. He taught not only the sport of tennis, but the Y’s core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect & Responsibility.

Foundation Grant for new Tumbling Mats

by Kristi Potts on 10/27/20

The Montgomery County Family YMCA recently received a $1500 grant award from the Montgomery County Community Foundation. The grant award along with money designated from the YMCA’s Annual Mystery Drop event will be used to replace all 12 of the main mats that are used for the tumbling classes held at the YMCA. The current mats used by the tumbling program are 12 to 16 years old. Our instructors have done a great job when working with the program participants to limit the possibility of injury but the cushion within the mats has noticeably been reduced. The YMCA also wishes to purchase 4 additional free-standing hand sanitizing stations to place within high traffic areas of the facility. Two of the stands would be placed in the multipurpose room where the tumbling program takes place to make sure our participants and instructors are practicing proper personal hygiene.

The YMCA would like to thank the Montgomery County Community Foundation Advisory Board and Stacey Goodman of the Community Foundations of Southwest Iowa for making these funds available.

To learn more about the Montgomery County Community Foundation one can contact Iowa Foundation Director Stacey Goodman by mail at 3555 Farnam St., Suite 222, Omaha, NE 68131, by phone at 1-800-794-3458, email info@omahafoundation.org, or visit the foundations website at omahafoundation.org/swiowa.
