by Kristi Potts on 11/13/14

The Montgomery County Family YMCA (Red Oak, Iowa) recently sent a proud delegation to the 2014 Fall Iowa Key Leadership Conference on Wednesday and Thursday, November 5th and 6th, 2014. The conference was held in Indianola, Iowa on the beautiful campus of Simpson College! The Montgomery County Family YMCA is a member of the Iowa Alliance which is made up of 26 YMCAs across the state of Iowa. Nearly 150 staff and volunteers attended the recent conference!

Representing the Montgomery County Family YMCA's delegation were: Brian Mensen, YMCA Board of Directors Vice-President, Rev. Fred Pilecki, YMCA Board Secretary, John Blomstedt, YMCA Program & Operational Manager, Missy Stickland, YMCA Aquatics & Program Director, Jamie Werges, YMCA Health/Wellness Personal Trainer and Nick Zimmer, YMCA Executive Director.

There were many outstanding workshops and presenters throughout the two-day conference. The conference planning committee did a wonderful job in hosting and secured a number of sponsors to keep the cost very affordable for YMCAs to attend such a great two days of education, networking, fun, fellowship, fine food and learning the best practices and leadership for one's YMCA staff and volunteers.

On Wednesday, Nov. 5th, Missy Stickland participated in the Youth and Family affinity group networking workshop at the Summerset Winery outside Indianola. Nick Zimmer and Jamie Werges attended training the “4 Weeks To A Healthier You” training at the Indianola YMCA. The program was developed by a team of nutrition and wellness experts and this training teaches YMCA staff how to market and deliver the program including the use of recruitment of community partners. This is a first statewide initiative that YMCAs can use to strengthen community through healthy living and improving the nation’s health and well-being. The target implementation phase is from 2015 through early 2016.

On Thursday, Nov. 6th, Nick Zimmer, Brian Mensen, John Blomstedt, Fred Pilecki, Missy Stickland, and Jamie Werges attended a wide range of workshops including titles such as: Living Our Cause, Great Boards, Rookie Workshop/Career Path, Cutting Edge Marketing, Navigating Through Tough Moments, Y-USA Delivering Our Cause Plan, Solution Circles, The Y-Retirement Fund: Your Partner in Financial Health, About Gro and Trends in Facility Development and Design, and Cultural Considerations. These activities all took place on the beautiful Simpson College Campus.

by Kristi Potts on 11/07/14

Montgomery County Family YMCA Press Release (Red Oak, Iowa)

Member Kaitlyn Danick tries out the new fitness equipment

Fres-co System USA, Inc. recently donated a $750 gift for the Y’s Wellness/Fitness/Lighting Project. We have already raised just over $100,000 for the Wellness/Fitness/Lighting Project, but that doesn’t cover it all, and we still need to add new energy efficient lighting to our gym and pool. The new equipment is helping YMCA members and guests from middle school students that complete a Jr. High Weight Training Program to older adults to improve their health, wellness, and fitness conditions by toning up one’s body and strengthening one’s body along with aiding in physical rehabilitation fitness programs. The new efficient lighting for the entire track and wellness center will also aid the Montgomery County Family YMCA’s annual utility expenses.

Montgomery County Community Foundation Grant

by Kristi Potts on 11/07/14

Montgomery County Family YMCA Press Release (Red Oak, Iowa)

The Montgomery County Family YMCA of Red Oak, Iowa would like to thank the Montgomery County Community Foundation Advisory Board for the recent exciting news that the YMCA was a recipient of a $10,000 Montgomery County Field of Interest grant made possible by the Montgomery County Community Foundation!

This grant will be used to enhance the experience of members of the YMCA and guests with new plastic lockers in the women’s/girl’s locker room that will be installed sometime in July, 2015. The new lockers will be maintenance free so this will assist the YMCA in lowering some maintenance cost for repairs and care of the current metal lockers that are approaching 14 years of facility usage.

The Montgomery County Community Foundation works with individuals, families, businesses and organizations to create permanent funds that address the changing vital community needs and interests. Donating to a permanently endowed fund helps your neighbors today and you help build a stronger community tomorrow. The foundation then invests and administers these funds and distributes grants to deserving, qualified nonprofit organizations. The goal of the Montgomery County Community Foundation grant program is to improve the quality of life in the county by supporting needs that are not being met in the areas of civic, cultural, health education, and social service.

The Montgomery County Family YMCA once again wishes to thank all the members of the Foundation Board along with the Community Foundations of Southwest Iowa staff for their time and willingness to help administer this program to truly make impressive impacts by funding so many outstanding and wonderful programs to many worthwhile organizations within our county.

To learn more about the Montgomery County Community Foundation one can contact Iowa Foundation Director Dennis N. Nissen by mail at 302 South 36th Street, Suite 100, Omaha, NE 68131, by phone at 1-800-794-3458, email Dennis at dennis@omahafoundation.org, or visit the foundations website at omahafoundation.org/swiowa.
