“Live Healthy Iowa” Local Team Results

Dietary Divas L –R:  John Blomstedt (YMCA Program Operations Manager), Maggie Yoakum, Irene Moraine and Laura Hamilton.

The Montgomery County Family YMCA, in coordination Montgomery County Memorial Hospital and the Red Oak HyVee, sponsored a local team “Live Healthy Iowa10 Week Challenge” competition to coincide with the statewide program that took place from January 28 through April 5. Seventeen teams participated in the local contest.

Teams could enter one of two categories, Weight Loss or Accumulated Activity. Teams in the Weight Loss category “weighed” in as of January 28 and tracked their weight to the end of the program. The winning team had the highest percentage of weight loss compared to their beginning weight. The Accumulated Activity team tracked the team member’s activity minutes through out the contest. The winning team was chosen based on the highest number of minutes per team member for the contest period.

Using calculations from the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, those participating in the Challenge were shown to have a projected savings of over $4500 in medical and pharmaceutical claims costs for the year.

Wellness Warriors: L-R: Jeanne Redel, Sara White, Mike Webb (HyVee Store Manager) & Kerry Hohbach.

In the Weight Loss category, the “Dietary Divas” team lost a total of 6.27% of their beginning body weight. The Accumulated Activity category winner was the “Wellness Warriors” team which averaged almost 96 hours of activity per team member. Each member of the winning teams received a $20.00 gift card courtesy of the Red Oak HyVee and a One Month Free Membership or $25 Y-Buck certificate from the Montgomery County Family YMCA.

SAVE THE DATE: MONDAY, JUNE 17, 2013 - Iowa Tax Sale Day

by Kristi Potts on 04/18/13

Memo

To:       2013 YMCA Tax Sale Day Volunteers
From: Nick Zimmer, Executive Director

Montgomery County Family YMCA
Date:   Thursday, April 18, 2013
RE: Iowa Tax Sale Day

It is once again that time of year for the Iowa Tax Sale Day with Dennis Bloom and the YMCA. This year’s date is Monday, June 17, 2013. This event will take place in Council Bluffs at the Mid American Center.

As you know, this event is a fundraiser for the Y’s “Be A Hero” Annual Campaign. The program assists youths and adults who want to become Y members or participate in a Y program, but cannot due to financial limitations. This year our program has a goal of $51,000 and as of the end of April, we have raised nearly $32,000.

This is a volunteer project. Everyone involved will be provided transportation to and from the Mid American Center in Council Bluffs and will also enjoy lunch at Famous Dave’s. We meet in the YMCA lobby and are ready to leave by 6:15 am and will arrive back in Red Oak around 5:30 pm. If you happen to drive yourself, you will be reimbursed by the YMCA for gas mileage.

This is your chance to have a great day with friends. It is a fun and interesting day and can help the Y raise a possible $8,000 or more. We receive $110 for each volunteer that we bring so we would greatly appreciate if you could help us out. If you know of any other volunteers that would be willing to help, that would be great!

If you would like to be involved in this great event, please let me know via phone at 712-623-2161 or email me at execdir@mcymca.com or feel free to stop by the Y and speak with me. Please let me know by Thursday, May 9th if you can attend this year.

PLEASE SAVE THE DATE: MONDAY, JUNE 17, 2013.

THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!
