IOWA TAX SALE
WANT TO HELP THE YMCA RAISE MONEY FOR THE
ANNUAL CAMPAIGN PROGRAM?
Monday, June 16th, 2014 is the Annual Iowa Tax Sale Day. The Y is looking for volunteers to help raise money for the 2014 Annual Campaign “The Y. So much More.” program. This program assists youth and adults who want to become members of the Y or want to participate in a Y program, but feel they cannot because of financial limitations.
Volunteers are asked to meet in the YMCA’s Lobby at 6:15 am ready to go. We will arrive back at the YMCA at 4:00 pm. The Y receives $110 per volun-teer that day and our goal is to have 55 volunteers. The Y could possibly earn $5,500 in just one day! Transportation to the Mid American Center in Council Bluffs and FREE lunch at Famous Dave’s are provided!
Volunteers need to be 18 years of age or older. RSVP to Nick Zimmer, YMCA Executive Director, by Wednesday, June 4th, 2014 via phone at 712-623-2161, email at execdir@mcymca.com, or stop by the Y anytime to see him.

SOUPFEST
It was a special afternoon of food, fun, and fellowship with delicious soups and a number of assorted
salads from the Auxiliary Club and volunteers with birthday cake
provided by Hy-Vee served from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm in the
Multi-Purpose room at the YMCA.
The entertainment was Bingo with several prizes given out to the win-ners.
Watch for the return of this program on October 3rd, 2014
for the new 2014-2015 series.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
CARRIE SHALTERS
Carrie Shalters has been a yoga instructor here at the Y for over 5 years, teaching a
vinyasa type of yoga that combines balance, strength, and flexibility with poses
like lotus blossom, downward dog, standing tree, and more on Tuesdays and
Thursdays at 9 am. She has also incorporated some yoga poses into sitting or
standing positions for a special Chair Yoga class on Tuesdays and Thursdays at
10:15 am which she demonstrated for the Diabetes Clinic on Thursday, March 5th.
In a recent letter she wrote, “I started coming to the Y probably 10 years ago to
get some exercise and release stress; the stress of having small children and having
a child with disabilities. That grew into a passion for fitness and led to
teaching Jazzercise here for five years and then teaching Yoga. Over time my
life has changed, my children have grown, and my special needs child (Jacob)
has passed away, but the Y has been a consistent place where I can come to
have alone time or where I can meet friends to socialize. I admit when I first
came to the YMCA, I felt a bit intimidated by all the equipment, but it quickly
became a place where I felt comfortable and welcome by all the kind people
here. I really feel the YMCA is one of Red Oak’s most valuable assets.”
We believe the Montgomery County community can be so much more. With
our members, volunteers, staff and partners, we take on the most urgent
needs in our community.
