MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
JENNI RICHARDS
Jenni Richards started coming to the Y several years ago when her kids were babies. It was convenient because of the child care option. She has taken Carrie's yoga classes, which she finds amazing, and eventually started running on the treadmills and using the weight equipment. She has had lots of experience weight-training in the past and really enjoyed how it made her body look and feel. As she was training for a marathon last winter, she started to train more heavily on weights to strengthen the muscles she would use while running long distances. The results were wonderful and she has kept up with that training ever since then. As she said in her letter, “I am an ultra marathon runner who enjoys running on single track trails. You may find me at Viking Lake running the trails around the lake. I am currently training for a 50 mile trail race in Duluth, MN in July. I have completed several half marathons, one full road marathon, and three 50k trail races.”
She now teaches a Running for Beginners class for those who have little to no experience running. During inclement weather, you may see her class running around the Y track. More recently, out of necessity to find a job to create additional income for her family, she started a personal training business. She really enjoys working with her clients and seeing them gain strength, confidence, and endurance through their work in the gym. She closed her letter with, “I have made many friends through the time I have been working with people in the weight room to meet their goals starting from the level they are at in that moment. Each of them inspires me everyday to keep training too!”
VOLUNTEERS OF THE MONTH
SUMMER DAY CAMP HELPERS
The volunteers for the month of August are the Summer Day Camp Volunteers Leandro Ramos and Oscar Torres. This is the second year Leandro has volunteered and Oscar’s first. There has been an average of 16-19 kids a week over the past few summers so the help is very welcome and appreciated.
Please join the YMCA in congratulating them on this honor.
DAY CAMP PICTURES
Summer Day Camp started Monday, June 1st, 2014 and continued until Friday, August 1st, 2014. The kids spent the days playing games and sports, swimming, enjoying craft time, and taking field trips to places like the Painting Barn in Clarinda, IA, owned by Curtis & Yulia Hamm, Pizza Ranch in Red Oak, IA to make their own dessert pizza, the farm of Dave and Tammy DeVries, and the Henry Doorly Zoo to name a few. Here are just some of the pictures taken during the summer, more can be found on the Facebook page Montgomery County YMCA Day Camp.
FITNESS EQUIPMENT
FUNDRAISER
The Montgomery County Family YMCA has raised $96,000 of the $99,000 Fitness Equipment Fundraiser project through gifts, memorial funds, and grants, but we would like to have all our members be involved with this great opportunity. Each donor will have their name on a donor recognition board!
Thirteen years ago we were a new facility with a fitness center full of top-notch, well respected Body Masters brand fitness equipment. That equipment has served us well over the years, but the 31-year old Body Masters Sport Equipment company closed it’s doors a few years back and parts to repair our equipment are no longer readily available.
The new wellness equipment will be in place by mid-August, 2014. We hope that you can help us reach this goal. We value your membership, friendship, and support of our YMCA that we are blessed to have.
YMCA OF THE ROCKIES
RAFFLE WINNER
Kathy Vandrey of Red Oak, IA won the raffle held at noon on July 25th, 2014 for the 2 night stay in a lodge room at either Snow Mountain Ridge or Estes Park Center in Colorado.
Kathy Vandrey and her family have been members of the Montgomery County Family YMCA since 2011 when she first started working as a building supervisor and in customer service.
Proceeds went to the YMCA’s Annual Campaign program. The YMCA of the Rockies raffle raised nearly $200 for the YMCA’s annual campaign.
YMCA DAY CAMP VISITOR
On Thursday, July 31st, 2014 Iowa State House Representative of District 23 Mark Costello paid a visit to the Montgomery County Family YMCA’s Summer Day Camp program.
Mark Costello and his family of Imogene, IA have been members of the YMCA since 2011 and have been involved in programs like swim lessons and tennis.
The Summer Day Camp had an exciting summer filled with fun and activities culminating in an overnight camping trip at Viking Lake and were likewise excited to spend some time talking with Representative Costello about the capitol and local government.
