Farmer's Market Coming to the Y!

by Kristi Potts on 05/14/18

The Montgomery County YMCA Has Something New and Exciting Happening This Summer!
Introducing the Red Oak Farmers Market at the Y!

The Red Oak Farmers Market vendors are thrilled to offer our community members two more ways to enjoy farm-fresh, healthy vegetables, fruits, herbs and baked goods this summer. The generous cooperation and support of the Montgomery County YMCA made this possible!

There are two ways for you to participate. (Both programs run from June 12 through August 21.)

1.                 1. Subscribe to a Farm Fresh Share.

2.      Shop the Red Oak Farmers Market at the Y.

Farm Fresh Share Program

The Farm Fresh Share (FFS) program offers a weekly container of seasonal produce, pre-packed and ready to pick up for just $10.00 per week. Each week your FFS container will be filled with different items - whatever is freshest, in-season and plentiful in the garden that week. Our vendor gardeners take pride in providing a fun assortment and often enclose recipe ideas plus tips on how to store and prepare the items in that week's FFS. This option is perfect for the busy family, busy young professional, anyone frustrated with buying mass-grown, tasteless produce and people curious to learn more about eating fresh and healthy.

The FFS program offers you eleven weeks of farm fresh produce for just $10 per week - a total of $110 for the season. Shareholders can pay upfront or monthly. For example;

         A typical June $10 FFS container might include: crisp garden lettuce ($2.00), a bunch of radishes ($1.00), fresh spinach ($1.00), garden asparagus ($4.00), cucumbers ($1.00) and cilantro or basil ($1.00).

         A typical July $10 FFS container might include: green beans ($2.00), kohlrabi ($1.00), zucchini or yellow summer squash ($2.00), tomatoes ($3.00) and new potatoes ($2.00).

As an FFS shareholder, you simply stop by the Y on Tuesday afternoons, 3-5 pm, pick up your pre-packed container and go! It's simple, fresh and fun! Information sheets and a sign-up contract are attached to this newsletter. Please consider experiencing a weekly container of farm-fresh goodness for your family by buying a Farm Fresh Share today!

Farm Fresh Share Contract Deadline: Friday, May 25, 5 pm. Be sure to mail your signed contract and payment in advance of the deadline. If you are mailing them close to the deadline, please contact your vendor to reserve your share. Remember, Farm Fresh Shares are available on a first come, first serve basis. Be sure to register early; don't miss out!

Red Oak Farmers Market at the Y
Every Tuesday, June 12 through August 21, 3-5 pm, the Red Oak Farmers Market will be open for business just outside the Y entrance. Everyone is welcome to shop the Market and experience farm fresh produce and fresh-baked goods. Rain or shine, the Red Oak Farmers Market vendors will be there ready to provide fresh vegetables, fruits, honey, homemade baked goods and other items for your family. Please make time in your busy schedules to shop the NEW Red Oak Farmers Market at the Y!

If you have questions about either of the above programs, please contact Maggie McQuown, Co-Manager of the Red Oak Farmers Market at mmcguown@visibleedge.com or 712-623-8919.
