MEMBER SPOTLIGHT UPDATE

FRED DAVIS

The Davis family has had a membership at the Montgomery County Family YMCA since it first opened. During her school years, Fred and Kathy’s daughter, Martha, constantly used the basketball court and tennis facility and Kathy is currently a water aerobics instructor at the Y.  Upon his retirement from Parker, one of Fred’s goals was to improve his physical fitness. As he said in a recent note, “I use the fitness center and walk/ run the track most weekday mornings. Not only is exercising a good way to begin the day I also enjoy visiting with other members that are there each morning. I feel Red Oak is very fortunate to have this facility. Nick and his staff do a great job!”

The Davis family has been wonderful donors to the annual campaign and volunteers to the YMCA helping to make it possible for other families to enjoy the Y in years to come. The annual campaign makes financial assistance available for children and families who otherwise could not afford to participate in YMCA membership and programs.

ANNUAL CAMPAIGN &
TENNIS CENTER PROJECT

The Annual Campaign is designed so that everyone in Montgomery County and the area has access to vital community/ area programs and resources that support youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

This year, the Montgomery County Family YMCA has raised $61,049.71 so far.

The Carder Tennis Center has become a regional attraction for adult, youth, family, high school, and college play over the years, but in order to maintain the same level of excellence we must make changes!

Some changes include:

· Energy and cost efficient LED Lighting
· New tennis nets
· Repainting of the tennis courts in the current ATP blue professional court colors
· New ten and under court lines to increase Junior Tennis playability and family playability.

We are working on local, county, regional, and even national grants and have already raised over $99,000 for the facility Enhancement.

To learn more about how you can support the Y’s cause, please contact Nick Zimmer, Executive Director at 712-623-2161 or execdir@mcymca.com.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

Reaching Goals by Reframing New Year’s Resolutions

Each year, millions of Americans turn the calendar to the New Year and make resolutions. But without breaking these goals down into smaller milestones, it can be easy to lose momentum.

This year, the Montgomery County Family YMCA is encouraging community members to give their New Year’s resolutions a boost by creating smaller, more manageable goals that can lead to the success of a larger one.

“Losing weight is too broad a goal,” explained Nick Zimmer, Montgomery County Family YMCA Executive Director. “Reframe your big resolution into something achievable. For example, instead of making a resolution to ‘lose weight,’ resolve to incorporate fruits and vegetables into at least two meals a day.”

Below are seven tips the Montgomery County Family YMCA recommends to help 2016 New Year’s resolutions stick.

1. Start small. Break those big resolutions into small, achievable goals. Instead of cutting chocolate out of your diet for good, vow to only have it a few times a week.

2. Take it one step at a time. Trying to change too many habits at once can easily lead to frustration. Instead of a New Year’s resolution, make a new month’s resolution.

3. Choose an organization that focuses on a holistic approach to health. When it comes to adding healthy behaviors, like increasing physical activity, it’s important to find a place that keeps you motivated. Your facility should not be just a gym, but a community organization that offers more health, more hope and more opportunity. The Montgomery County Family YMCA strives for creating these opportunities for our members.

4. Talk it out. It’s easier to stick to your resolutions if you have a partner or friend working toward similar goals. Team up with someone to set your 2016 goals and help each other establish a game plan dedicated to achieving them.

5. Volunteer Your Time. Giving back and supporting neighbors can benefit everyone involved. Not only is it a personally rewarding experience to help others in need, but it’s also a way to meet new people or discover an interest.

6. Move More. It’s important for children to get at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day (30 minutes for adults). Incorporate physical activity into your daily routines.

7. Put Extras to Good Use. Do you have extra canned goods or clothes that could benefit others in need? Clean out your pantry, closet or attic and donate extra items to homeless shelters or community outreach programs.
