THIS IS YOUR Y

SCHILDBERG DONATION

The Montgomery County Family YMCA of Red Oak, Iowa recently received a $5,000 grant from the E.F. & Sylvia Schildberg Foundation from Greenfield, Iowa.

The grant will assist the YMCA with LED lighting in the YMCA’s Wilson Gymnasium and Aquatics Center.  The new lights will be installed in the YMCA’s  gymnasium in May and June of 2015 and the swimming pool LED lights will be installed the week of August 10th -15th, 2015 during the YMCA’s annual maintenance closed down week. The new LED lighting will assist the YMCA in lowering energy utility costs.

The Schildberg Construction Company of Greenfield, Iowa was founded in 1936 by a great husband and wife team, E.F. and Sylvia Schildberg. The couple valued hard work, honesty, loyalty and desire to help others. The company prospered over the years. E.F. and Sylvia always gave a great share of credit for their success to their employees and customers.

On September 30, 1986, fifty years after the founding of the Schildberg Construction Company, the Schildberg Foundation was created by Sylvia Schildberg as an expression of appreciation to the people of this area. The purpose of the Foundation is to give financial assistance to non-profit, charitable, educational or other causes that better the human condition and encourage community betterment.  It was Sylvia’s hope that in helping others the ultimate reward would be for that same dedication to be passed on to future generations.

To learn more about the E. F. & Sylvia Schildberg Foundation one can contact the foundation office in Greenfield, Iowa at 515-743-2131.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT UPDATE
GERRY LUNDGREN

Gerry and her family have been members of the YMCA since the building was first opened in 2000. Her family has enjoyed the youth programs (softball, basketball, swimming lessons) and now as a retired person she has been taking advantage of the fitness classes, tennis lessons and leagues, and the weight room and exercise equipment. As she said Wednesday while playing Tennis, “I think exercise contributes not only to my physical health, but is a very big part of my emotional well-being. This YMCA is a great place to stay fit and to stay connected to people.”

She has recently become involved in volunteer opportunities at the Y and has a new appreciation for all the employees and volunteers that keep our YMCA vital. Volunteering is one of the essential ways the Y engages people to bring about meaningful change in building our community.

HEALTHY AGING

We believe the Y can play an integral role in implementing solutions to the challenges that older adults face, both physical and social. As adults age and chronic disease rates increase, their physical activity decreases. Of those ages 65 to 74 only 41% participate in some form of aerobic activity. That percent drops to 30% for those ages 75 to 84 and to just 18% for those 85 and over.

The Montgomery County Family YMCA's mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all! In our 66,000 sq. /ft. state of the art facility we serve over 1043 households with membership totaling over 2,682 and provide group exercise classes for all ages.

For more information on Y-USA’s work in healthy aging email healthyliving@ymca.net.
