MEMBER SPOTLIGHT UPDATE

CATHY JARRETT

Cathy Jarrett joined the YMCA in the year 2000 and up until last year spent most of her time lifting weights in the fitness area with some walking on the track and occasional pool exercise after her regular workout.Last fall Cathy changed her primary workout to water exercises, which refreshed her enjoyment of a regular routine to suit her needs and schedule. Currently, she spends one hour five days a week doing laps in the pool using the resistance dumbbells, kick board, and swim fins. As Cathy said, “The pool exercise has eliminated the joint stiffness and hip pain I had been experiencing for about six months.” A secondary benefit for her has been the motivation to eat and drink healthy after she finishes her workout so she does not undo all her hard work by eating more than necessary. Her basic formula for losing weight is to eat less and exercise more. Cathy continued to add, “In my opinion, there are two elements that go hand-in-hand down the path to fitness -- eating with-in reasonable calorie limits to maintain a normal weight range combined with exercise to maintain muscle tone. I think the variety of options at the YMCA can help each of us build our fitness program according to age and ability to achieve individual goals.” It is amazing how good you can feel both physically and mentally if you make the Y a part of your lifestyle!

COMMUNITY NEEDS ASSESSMENT SURVEY

The Montgomery County Family YMCA, Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Montgomery County Public Health, the Viking Center of Stanton, Red Oak Community School District, Stanton Community School District, Southwest Valley School District and various county businesses realize that strengthening our community is our common cause. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors. The above listed organizations are joining together to conduct a community needs assessment. Based on this community needs assessment, we will work to design and deliver new programs and services that address critical issues in the areas of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. We will be making the community needs assessment survey available both in an online form and a hard copy form.

Responses are not individually tracked and are kept confidential. The assessment should take approximately 5 minutes to complete and the results will be compiled into a summary that will be shared with the community partners. The survey was activated online on Monday, July 13 and will be available through Monday, August 17. During the upcoming Montgomery County Fair (July 14 – 19), the survey was made available in a hard copy form at the Montgomery County Family YMCA, Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, and Montgomery County Public Health booths. There will also be available hard copy forms at the Viking Center in Stanton. The link to the survey is http://surveys.ymcaexchange.org/f/177380/1219/If you would like more information on the Community Needs Assessment Survey, please contact John Blomstedt at the Montgomery County Family YMCA at either 712-623-2161 or progdir@mcymca.com.
