ZOE FOR PRESIDENT

Amidst the heat of this election, when politicians everywhere are arguing over who’s most qualified to make the country better, the Y would like to introduce a candidate EVERYONE can get behind: Zoe, a one-year-old girl. From early education to career readiness, the Y gives kids like Zoe the support they need to be president…potentially…in like, 2064. Zoe represents the potential the Y sees in all kids to one day become president if they’re nurtured properly and given the right opportunities. When you donate to Zoe’s campaign, you’re donating to your local Y, Montgomery County Family YMCA, supporting the programs and services that give kids like Zoe what they need to thrive from childhood to old age. When you give to Zoe, you’re giving for a better us.

The Y sees the potential in all children and how in supporting all kids, the Y can help create a better future for all. And whether that’s a teacher, firefighter or the next president of the United States, Zoe is showing that with the Y’s support, all kids have the opportunity to become their best selves.

The power behind this campaign is you and Montgomery County Family YMCA! Your community’s engagement with Zoe for President and with local media plays a key role in the campaign’s success.

Zoe’s site ZoeForPresident.net  has campaign videos and a way to make donations.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT UPDATE
LISA WHIGHAM

An amazing Red Oak Play & Stay Package from Red Coach Inn & Restaurant and Montgomery County Family YMCA was won by Lisa Whigham of Red Oak as a Valentine’s Day Appreciation Gift Promotion for being a current member of the YMCA. Lisa has been an active member of the Y since it opened in Red Oak and comes in regularly to take part in classes such as Express Pump and swimming laps in the pool. As she explained, “My husband has to take heart medication and I consider my membership a way of preventing this and other pain while enjoying a good time with friends.”

The drawing was held on Tuesday, February 9th, 2016 at 8 p.m. for this special prize package. The Red Oak Play & Stay Package includes: a one night stay at the beautiful Red Coach Inn in Red Oak, Iowa, a $10 food voucher at the Red Coach Restaurant, and their choice of indoor tennis court time at the Montgomery County Family YMCA, 2 tickets to a live production at the wonderful Wilson Performing Arts Center, or championship golf for two with a golf cart at the Red Oak Country Club.

February was American Heart Month and as a leading community-based network committed to improving the nation’s health; the Montgomery County family YMCA urges everyone to help prevent heart disease by lowering your blood pressure.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heart disease is the nation’s number one killer, responsible for 1 in 4 deaths each year in the United States. Additionally, 1 in 3 adults have high blood pressure with less than half having it under control. Research shows that the simple process of checking and recording your blood pressure at least twice a month over a four month period, along with regular physical activity, proper nutrition and reducing sodium intake, may lower blood pressure in people with high blood pressure.

“There are many factors in keeping your heart healthy and having a handle on your blood pressure is an effective tool in preventing heart disease,” said Nick Zimmer, Executive Director, Montgomery County Family YMCA. “Whether you have high blood pressure or are at risk for heart disease, the Y has many options available that can help.”

TENNIS CENTER
PROJECT

The Carder Tennis Center has become a regional attraction for adult, youth, family, high school, and college play over the years, but in order to maintain the same level of excellence we must make changes!

Some changes include:

· Energy and cost efficient LED Lighting
· New tennis nets
· Repainting of the tennis courts in the current ATP blue professional court colors
· New ten and under court lines to increase Junior Tennis playability and family playability.

We are working on local, county, regional, and even national grants and have already raised $110,234.71 for the facility Enhancement.

To learn more about how you can support the Y’s cause, please contact Nick Zimmer, Executive Director at 712-623-2161 or execdir@mcymca.com.

WILL IT FLOAT?

Students from the Red Oak Middle School signed up for an Extend Learning Opportunity.  Students that signed up for Will It Float were from grades 6th-8th, and all different learning levels.  The task students were given was to build a boat that would be able to hold 1 to 2 people and be able to float across the pool at the YMCA.  Students were given materials of duct tape and cardboard.  They learned the importance of working with others and accomplishing a task.  Students got one try to get it right and worked collaboratively with each other and had to complete the task within a four week time period.

On February 19th, 2016, the Will It Float group headed to the YMCA to see if their projects were up for the competition.  Out of the five groups of students four of the boats were successful in the mission to float across the pool at the Montgomery YMCA.  The fastest time was 49 seconds and the group consisted of four 8th grade girls: Yaeline Ramos, Haley Plambeck, Kendal Klells, and Chelsey Gilleland.
