FAMILY YMCA
November 2016
STEM PROGRAM
The Montgomery County Family YMCA received a grant from the Iowa Governor's STEM Advisory Council for the Making STEM
Connections Scale-Up program. This program was developed by the Science Center of Iowa to help bring the Makers Movement to the area's learning environment. The grant allowed John Blomstedt, Program Operations Manager, to attend full-day training on the Makers Movement and for the Y to receive a kit for the program valued at over $6,000. Mary Carlson, Red Oak Community School District Middle School science teacher, applied for the grant for the Y. Mary is part of the Y's Community Needs Assessment Steering committee.
This grant enabled the YMCA to teach 21st century skills that will be vital in the workforce of the future. 4th– 6th grade students had the opportunity to work on projects involving science, technology, engineering and math offered by the Montgomery County Extension Office on Early-Out Wednesdays at the YMCA for the past 5 weeks.
The YMCA is more than a sports and recreation center. An important focus of the Y is youth development.

The YMCA held its Mystery Drop on Sunday, October 23rd at 1 p.m. in the Montgomery County Fair Main Grandstand Arena. The event’s major sponsor for a third year was Johnson Helicopter Services of the Red Oak/Emerson, Iowa area. JHS provided the helicopter to drop several tennis balls among which were the multi-color money balls. All 300 tickets sold out for a 5th consecutive year.
It was a beautiful day with perfect weather with over 100 people were present. The YMCA Auxiliary club had refreshments and the audience was treated to great music from local DJ Greg Brower. The event will generate over $20,000 to assist the YMCA in the areas of endowment; annual support; operational, programming & facility maintenance needs; and planned facility enhancements to be enjoyed by our YMCA members.
The YMCA would like to thank the 50-plus volunteer sales team members for making this fun-filled event possible; YMCA staff and accounting department for heir work in keeping track of ticket sales as well as set up work for the event; and the 2016 Mystery Drop judges Shirley Billings, Brian LeRette, Nancy Zimmer, and Mark McCaffrey. A special thank you to Johnson Helicopter Service, YMCA Auxiliary Club (for the great refreshments), the Montgomery County Fair Board for the usage of their fine facilities, everyone that purchased tickets for this event, the City of Red Oak in working with us on the flight of the helicopter in the community, KCSI and the Red Oak Express for their promotional efforts of this event, and Greg Brower, DJ and public announcer for this event.
This year’s winning blue ball for $5,000 was won by Pat Jensen of Red Oak who donated part of her winnings back to the YMCA, the red ball winner for $1,500 was the Minas Corporation of Lubbock Texas/ Red Oak who will be using their funding for their employee health and wellness program at the Red Oak Plant, and the white ball winner for $500 was Carol Hibbs of Marshalltown, Iowa, who donated funds to the YMCA as well.
