MEMBER SPOTLIGHT UPDATE
MARY ALICE WOODS
Mary Alice Woods has been going to the YMCA for over 10 years. She started with 3 times a week for a couple of years and then decided she wanted to get into better shape. Now she comes at least 5 times a week. When asked why she goes to the Y, Mary replied, “I go to the YMCA because I feel better and now that I am retired I want to keep active. Until a year ago I was primarily exer-cising on the elliptical trainer and weight machines but started to have problems with my back so I started swim-ming instead and love it. I feel I am getting a better over-all work-out and have very little back pain. I started slow and now am swimming a little over a mile each time.”We believe the Y can play an integral role in implementing solutions to the challenges that older adults face, both physical and social. As adults age and chronic disease rates increase, their physical activity decreases. Of those ages 65 to 74 only 41% participate in some form of aerobic activity. That percent drops to 30% for those ages 75 to 84 and to just 18% for those 85 and over.

HANDRAIL DONATION
The YMCA would like to thank Dave & Sharron Howes for the donation of a new handrail for the Wilson Aquatics Center. The new handrail was installed on September 1st in the Wilson Aquatic Center and will be a welcome addition for the many classes, physical therapy sessions, swim meets, and group and private swim lessons in the pool.
Dave & Sharron Howes are dedicated YMCA members who donated the $509 needed for the handrail as they felt it was a needed safety feature for all ages to use. Dave and Sharron have volunteered in many roles. Sharron worked as a part-time membership/marketing assistant, served on the board of directors, and currently enjoys the water exercise class program.
Dave and Sharron have shared a passion for the YMCA since they first got involved in its inception in Red Oak over 20 years ago.
