The Montgomery County Family YMCA held its Mystery Drop on Sunday, October 18th, 2015 at 12:30 pm with the “The Big Drop” taking place at 1 p.m. at the Montgomery County Fair Main Grandstand Arena.  For the second year the events major sponsor was Johnson Helicopter Services of the Red Oak/ Emerson, Iowa area. JHS provided the helicopter to drop several tennis balls amongst which was a multi-color money ball. All 300 tickets sold out for a record 4th year for a chance to win $5,000 and if present another $500 was available to the winner(s).

The event will clear $22,000  to assist the YMCA with endowment funding, general operational funding, and some capital improvement needs at the YMCA such as the LED tennis lighting and blended tennis court painting to assist the Junior / Family Tennis program.

The YMCA would like to thank all our sales volunteer team members for making this fun-filled event to raise funds for the YMCA possible and to our YMCA staff and accounting department for all of their work this past month in keeping track of ticket sales as well as set up work for the event. A special thank you to Johnson Helicopter Service, YMCA Auxiliary Club (for the great refreshments), the Montgomery County Fair Board for the usage of their fine facilities, all the people that purchased tickets for this event, the City of Red Oak in working with us on the flight of the helicopter in the community, KCSI and the Red Oak Express for their promotional efforts of this event, Greg Brower our DJ  and public announcer for this event, and Darold and Bev Swanson of Red Oak for their wonderful donations of some of their grandson Jeffrey Hanson’s world-wide famous artwork thank you notes and a autograph book about Jeffery and the Hanson family titled “Lessons from CLOD”.

This year’s winning ticket was a split ticket between Promotional Concepts of Red Oak (staff) and Tom & Ann Iverson of Red Oak. Promotional Concepts ticket members were: Mike Lamb, Sandy Taylor, Barb Michael, Amy Elwood (Villisca, IA), Missy Torbett.  Since Barb Michael was at the event there to represent her team members the Promotional Concept Staff members earned an additional $500, thus their share was $3,000.  The Iverson’s received $2,500 and donated all of their winnings back to the YMCA!

Other winners this year were: Marla Worthington (Red Oak) won $100 Red Oak Chamber & Industry Bucks, Leah Mensen & Christy Bennett (Red Oak) won $75 Red Oak Chamber & Industry Bucks, and Lyle & Sue Timmerman (Nodaway) won $50 Red Oak Chamber & Industry Bucks.

Jeffrey Hanson’s book “Lessons from CLOD” was won by Kevin Walford of Red Oak and some notecard packages of six with Hanson’s artwork were won by Mike Olson of Red Oak, John Blomstedt of Red Oak and son J.C. Blomstedt of Ralston, NE, Building Crafts, Inc. of Red Oak, Iowa – Jeff Soe, and YMCA Aquatics / MCMH employees and some friends of the YMCA Team (Michelle Hartfield of Griswold, IA, Deb Blomstedt of Red Oak, IA, Pam Jones of Red Oak, IA, Ann Iverson of Red Oak, IA, Tamara Dean of Red Oak, IA, Rosie Stark of Essex, Iowa, Shay Grebin of Stanton, IA, Shirley Kerr of Red Oak, IA, Todd Reisinger of Red Oak, IA, and Kaleb Robuck of Red Oak, IA).

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT UPDATE

MARY ALICE WOODS

Mary Alice WoodsMary Alice WoodsMary Alice Woods has been going to the YMCA for over 10 years. She started with 3 times a week for a couple of years and then decided she wanted to get into better shape. Now she comes at least 5 times a week. When asked why she goes to the Y, Mary replied, “I go to the YMCA because I feel better and now that I am retired I want to keep active. Until a year ago I was primarily exer-cising on the elliptical trainer and weight machines but started to have problems with my back so I started swim-ming instead and love it. I feel I am getting a better over-all work-out and have very little back pain. I started slow and now am swimming a little over a mile each time.”We believe the Y can play an integral role in implementing solutions to the challenges that older adults face, both physical and social. As adults age and chronic disease rates increase, their physical activity decreases. Of those ages 65 to 74 only 41% participate in some form of aerobic activity. That percent drops to 30% for those ages 75 to 84 and to just 18% for those 85 and over.

The Y Receives $20,000 Grant from Iowa West Foundation

by Kristi Potts on 10/20/15

Montgomery County Family YMCA receives $20,000 for Indoor Tennis Center Facility Enhancements

Iowa West Foundation grants and initiatives total nearly $7 million.

A portion of nearly $7 million in grants and initiatives awarded by the Iowa West Foundation for Cycle 2 of 2015 will benefit the Montgomery County Family YMCA of Red Oak, Iowa.  In addition to several programs and projects within Council Bluffs, there were a number of grants awarded to rural southwest Iowa communities. The grants will be used to assist 22 nonprofit organizations and governmental entities with funding for area projects. The Foundation targets resources into grants and initiatives that focus on economic development, education, placemaking and healthy families. The Montgomery County Family YMCA received $20,000 for upgrades to the indoor tennis facility.

The Iowa West Foundation’s vision: “A community where families choose to
live, and businesses choose to locate, because of its quality of life and standard of living” is a perfect complement to the Montgomery County Family YMCA’s focus: “a cause-driven organization for youth development,  healthy living and social responsibility”’ said Nick Zimmer, Montgomery County Family YMCA’s Executive Director”.” The two organizations are able to accomplish countless community goals through their relationship”.

The Montgomery County Family YMCA’s $20,000 grant is targeted toward the purchase of enhancements in the Carder Indoor Four Court Tennis Center within the Montgomery County Family YMCA in Red Oak. The facility has become a regional recreational center that allows tennis enthusiasts of all ages and abilities to play in one of the finest indoor tennis centers in the United States.

There are less than (70) YMCA’s in the United States that have indoor tennis facilities and the entire state of Iowa has less than 20 indoor tennis centers. The tennis center opened up in December, 2001. The facility plays host to youth and adult tennis lessons, adult tennis leagues, open play time, family tennis on Sunday evenings during the winter months, United States Tennis Association Junior and Adult tennis tournaments, clinics from a local teaching pro, special tennis clinics from collegiate and former professional tennis players, Iowa high school boys and girls tennis matches, Iowa Boys and Girls State District matches, the Hawkeye Ten conference championships, NCAA Division II & III / NAIA men’s and women’s collegian tennis matches from colleges and universities from Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, Indiana, South Dakota, Alabama and Kentucky.

“The Montgomery County Family YMCA has taken on an ambitious $110,000 tennis facility enhancement capital improvement project to keep the Carder Indoor Tennis Center’s standing as one of the finest tennis centers in the United States”, Zimmer said. “This initiative will continue to attract visitors from all over the country to use this center and learn more about the community of Red Oak and southwest Iowa while participating in tennis programming at the Montgomery County Family YMCA”.

With the $20,000 grant from the Iowa West Foundation, the YMCA now has raised $90,200 for the project. The YMCA continues to work with other grant funding opportunities and also is securing private contributions. The YMCA did receive two major private lead gifts to kick off the fund raising efforts.

Zimmer projects the funds will help pay for:

·         Energy and cost efficient LED Lighting

·         New tennis nets

·         Repainting the tennis courts in the current ATP blue professional court colors

·         New blended tennis lines to increase more regional tennis play, lessons, clinics and tournament for ages 10 and under

·         More family tennis time

·         Increase in youth development  through the sport of tennis

·         Increase in social responsibility through the sport of tennis

·         Increase in healthy living for all ages and abilities

The complete project funds will be secured by winter of 2016. The LED lighting will be installed in spring of 2016, with repainting of the tennis courts, blended lines and new nets will be installed in late May, 2016. The YMCA plans to coordinate an open house and donor recognition for the tennis center in the summer of 2016.

About the Iowa West Foundation

The Iowa West Foundation is one of the largest private foundations in the Midwest. It has distributed more than $330 million in grants to non-profits and governmental agencies through southwest Iowa and eastern Nebraska since the inception of its grant program. Visit www.iowawestfoundation.org to view a complete list of the 2015 Cycle 2 Grants and Initiatives.

Funding for the foundation’s grants comes from the investment earnings and the Iowa West Racing Association, which receives contracted license fees from casino operators, Ameristar and Harrah’s. The Iowa West Racing Association distributes funds to the Iowa West Foundation – an independent 501(c)(3) organization under the IRS Code. The foundation makes grants throughout southwest Iowa and eastern Nebraska.

Heritage Club Dinner a Success!

by Kristi Potts on 10/08/15

Montgomery County Family YMCA Press Release (Red Oak, Iowa)
October, 2015

L-R: Mark Jackson, Ann Carder, Tom Carder, Evonne Williams, and Bill Williams. Mark Jackson and Ann Carder were the 2015 Inductees to the Montgomery County Family YMCA’s “Heritage Club Endowment Hall of Fame”, Tom Carder and the late Catherine Carder began the annual Heritage Club Dinner and underwrite it, and Bill & Evonne Williams were the guest speakers.

The Montgomery County Family YMCA hosted their annual Heritage Club Dinner at the Red Coach Inn & Restaurant on Monday, October 5, with a record attendance of 135.

The Heritage Club Dinner is made possible by the financial support of Tom Carder and his late wife, Catherine, of Red Oak. The Carder’s purpose is to have the dinner to recognize the YMCA’s endowment donors on an annual basis. Tom and Catherine also played a major role for the YMCA’s Carder Indoor Tennis Center to be one of only sixty indoor tennis centers located in YMCA’s in the United States.

The 2015 Inductees to the YMCA’s “Heritage Club Endowment Hall of Fame” were Ann Carder & Mark Jackson.  Both are past YMCA Board of Directors Chairpersons, with Ann serving as co-chair of the YMCA’s Capital Campaign that raised $6.6 million to construct the 70,000 sq. ft. facility that serves the health/wellness needs of people of all ages.  Ann, along with other volunteer campaigners, also rose the funding to establish the YMCA’s endowment fund program. The efforts by Ann, along with the countless dedicated volunteers and donors, have established a strong foundation for the Montgomery County Family YMCA.

Mark served on the capital campaign and facility planning committees. He currently serves on the YMCA’s facility committee. Ann and Mark served on the facility planning committee for the YMCA from 1997-2001. They continue to be members of the YMCA and participants in various programs. They have also served on local, state, regional and national tennis committees in addition to various community volunteer roles.

This year’s dinner featured keynote speakers Bill & Evonne Williams from Omaha, NE. Bill is a 1969 graduate of Red Oak Community High School. Bill & Evonne are not veterans, but honoring those who are veterans has been a highlight of their lives. They are the co-organizers of the Honor Flights in Nebraska, and thanks to many generous Nebraskans, donations reached $2,000,000, making it possible to take 1500 Nebraska WWII Veterans and 600 Korean War Veterans on nine flights to Washington D.C. They have received numerous awards including, 2013 Midlanders of the Year by the Omaha World-Herald, 2014 Knights of Aksarben Court of Honor and the 2015 Reflection Award by the Midlands Community Foundation.

The Williamses are now focused on honoring our country’s Fallen from The War on Terror – those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq or Afghanistan while wearing our country’s uniform. The Williamses are also working on the Gold Star Kids Honor Flight. This flight is for the young widows and children of the fallen from Nebraska in Iraq and Afghanistan. They will fly from Omaha to Lincoln on Saturday, November 7th to attend the Nebraska vs Michigan State game.

Prior to organizing the Honor Flights in Nebraska, Bill was involved with sales and Evonne in non-profit management (Make-A-Wish and Strategic Air & Space Museum).

The Williamses have four sons:
Ben – Army Captain, JAG Corps, has had three tours to Iraq.
Tom – Marine Captain with a tour to Afghanistan in 2013.
Sam – Army Captain, stationed at Fort Sill.
Max- Marine Sergeant, now a civilian air traffic controller in Japan.

The photo memorial that the Williamses have coordinated titled:  “Remembering Our Fallen” has a goal now to create one display for each state.

The Iowa “Remembering Our Fallen” exhibit was displayed at the dinner and is currently being displayed at the Montgomery County History Center located at 2700 N 4th Street, Red Oak, Iowa during their operational hours, 11am to 4pm, from Tuesday, October 6th, 2015 – Sunday, October 11th, 2015. Be sure to see this amazing display to honor our Iowa fallen that have served our country. To find out more information about the “Remembering Our Fallen” exhibit and the Honor Flights please visit: www.rememberingourfallen.org.
