Montgomery County Family YMCA Press Release (Red Oak, Iowa)
Friday, April 21st, 2017
The Red Oak Rotary Club made a visit to one of the Red Oak Senior High School Boy's and Girl's Tennis Team's practices on Monday, April 3rd, 2017 at the Carder Indoor Tennis Center located in the Montgomery County Family YMCA. Water was given out to all players and coaches Dan Martinez and Nita Martinez. The Red Oak Rotary Club committee in partnership with the TOGETHERHOODTM committee coordinated visits at various Red Oak Community School extracurricular activities, other area schools, and special community / area projects where the participants and/or volunteers can use a break for refreshments and at the same time learn about the Red Oak Rotary Club and their mission of Service Above Self.
The TOGETHERHOODTM social responsibility program provides Y members with an easy, fun, and rewarding way to volunteer for service projects that strengthen our community. The program is run by a committee of Y members that helps organize and run four service projects a year with only a one year commitment.
Area residents that are involved with the TOGETHERHOODTM program from youth to older active adults can volunteer to help coordinate and/or be a part of worthwhile community/area events. It’s fun, rewarding, and a great way to give back to one's community/area for what the community does for us as residents of the community, county, and area.
The TOGETHERHOODTM program has offered the following three programs this term:
• The Cheer program which provided holiday cards to patients at the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak Rehab & Care facility, Regency, Arlington Place, and Good Samaritan Center.
• The Adopt a Child program which provided a brighter Christmas for children in need to receive a holiday gift through a sponsor.
• Provided coordinated times with coaches, instructors, and community leaders to attend a practice or program for the youth of our community/county and/or area or adults within the community/county that are working hard on worthwhile community projects to enjoy some light refreshments provided by the Red Oak Rotary Club and the YMCA TOGETHERHOODTM committee while learning about each respective program and organization. Recently water was given out to the Red Oak Youth Soccer Club teams, the YES Mentoring program and water to the Boy’s Jr. High School Track team of Red Oak, Red Oak Boy’s and Girls Golf teams and Red Oak Boy’s and Girls Track teams.
• The final project for the 2016-17 year started early April, 2017 and will end on May 10th, 2017 with the Walking School Bus program/activities. The walking school bus program is being coordinated with Southwestern Iowa Community College, Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, Red Oak Public Library, and other community organizations. The walking sites are the YMCA – Physical Activities, Red Oak Public Library – Literacy, the Red Oak History Museum, and at a site TBA where SWICC & ISU Extension Office would hold Career Exploration classes.
